Kings Acre Golf Academy

The Academy

Kings Acre Golf Academy is the coaching side of Kings Acre Golf Course, in the Midlothian countryside six miles from Edinburgh city centre. Five PGA coaches work here, each with their own way of teaching, so you can find the one that suits you.

At Kings Acre, open golf means exactly that: you do not have to be a member to play the course or to take a lesson with us. We coach complete beginners, club golfers chasing a lower handicap, and juniors coming through. Lessons are 30 or 60 minutes, booked online, with a coach you choose.

Facilities

Academy facilities

The practice set-up here is built for coaching, not just for hitting balls.

Launch monitors. Our coaches use Trackman, Full Swing and Bushnell. Which one you will be hitting on depends on the coach you book, and each of them will tell you what the numbers mean rather than just showing you the screen.

Custom fitting

A main custom fitting hub for PXG

Kings Acre is one of PXG’s main custom fitting hubs, which means a full fitting cart on site and a coach who fits clubs week in, week out rather than once a season.

  • Full PXG head, shaft and loft options to test
  • Fitted indoors in a private bay on a launch monitor
  • Driver, irons, wedges and putter
  • Open to everyone, member or not

Fittings are booked the same way as a lesson. If you are not sure whether you need new clubs or a change in your swing, book a lesson first and your coach will tell you straight.

The course

An 18-hole parkland course on your doorstep

The academy sits alongside Kings Acre Golf Course, an 18-hole par 70 parkland course designed by Graeme Webster and opened in 1997. The King family have run it across two generations, and it is open golf: no membership needed to play.

More than fifty bunkers and a good deal of shaping mean there is plenty to practise for, and the short game area was built to cover the shots the course actually asks of you.

All year round

Golf that does not stop in October

The ground here is sandy and free-draining, so the course stays playable when heavier courses are closed or on temporary greens. The range is floodlit and covered, which means a lesson in January at five o’clock is no different from one in June.

Winter is the best time to change something in your swing. You have the months before the season to groove it, and the bays to do it in.
